Back In Black!

Some pretty sexy and exciting news (besides fresh coat of paint we applied over this news post)! We have an authorized working build of Survivors of Ragnarok on Desura! Yup it's every bit of awesome as it sounds! Although it might just be us that are absolutely ecstatic.

"But what does this mean for me," you ask? Well it's just one step closer to becoming a proper legitimate Indie company capable of asking vast amounts of money from you in order to further our goals of world domination.

if only the Desura version looked that cool....

Yup for the low low starting price of $1,999.99 you can pre-order yourself a copy of Survivors of Ragnarok that comes with the DLC for the other 35% of the single-player campaign!

But don't worry we'll make sure your properly treated to post-release support in form of map packs and more single-player campaigns for just $149.99 a piece! Oh yes how the greed of a single small indie company can manifest into an unquenchable money hungry giant.

If you guys have not gotten a chance to try out Survivors of Ragnarok - Alpha 9.2 what would be a more perfect time then now? I will just conveniently leave a link to our Desura page below.

In case someone's sarcasm meter is not working and wondering why we are selling the game for $1999.99... we are not.

3x3 = 9

It turns out we're pretty bad at trying to get our game to work with outside API's. For the last couple days we've been sitting on Alpha 9 working on getting our Public Alpha's to be released on Desura. Unfortunately we fail at making the game work with the system. Fortunately the guys at Desura are vastly more intelligent and savvy then we could ever be and have helped us out tremendously.

Well after days of pain-staking work and bug fixes we have a combat system implement. It's fairly basic at the moment and we still haven't set up a dwarf inventory (you guys are stuck with duel wielding dwarf until next update) but it gets the job done in terms of slaughtering countless hordes of cute chickens.

SURVIVORS OF RAGNARÖK - ALPHA 9

 ==================
Alpha 9 updates
==================
-Added combat system.
-Added combat animations for dwarf.
-Added support for .OGG files.
-Changed chickens now spawn in survival mode.
-Changed right-clicking chickens will have them get hunted by a "hunter" dwarf.
*9.01 Update
 -Added red haired dwarf.
 -Added chicken falling animation.
-Added new icons for lumber and planks.

Things to implement:

A classier way of highlighting mobs that are targeted. As of this current build, when a mob is targeted to be attacked it uses the same red opaque tile that we use for deleting blocks. What we need to implement is something a little much more aesthetically pleasing. Unfortunately we wish we had the creativity and skills needed to show such a concept. All we have is a chicken with some sort of sword that seems to defy the laws of physics above it.

It's a shame that we can't even apply simple physics on objects like swords in our game.

While we are on the subject of aesthetically pleasing things we need to give our trees the same treatment.

Dwarven Inventory.

Finally we really need to start implementing some small UI features that we've been holding off on for the greater sake and excuse of spending our resources on much more important features. (I believe we are long overdue for a system to cancel tasks issued by the player)

These are just some things for us to think of going into our next update, as well as some things to look forward to.

Because we still haven't run out of these things here's some more Starcraft 2 Contest entries to for you guys to enjoy. This is by Pascal Hoogt with some great mock-ups of a dwarven abode.

Preparing For War (Mini Update)

I figured I would take a break from our usual elaborate and whimsical posts to bring you guys a quick little peak of some animations I've been working on all week. Don't worry though, we will have our usual lavish news posts later this week along with a sexy new build for you guys to get your hands on.

While it's lacking in chicken puns and fowl jokes (see what I did there?), it should hopefully be eye candy for many of you. For the minority that does not see why combat animation of cute little dwarf dual wield swords is not aesthetically pleasing I can assure you that you are either blind or enraged that the receiving end could potentially be a chicken.

So here is another entertaining Starcraft 2 entry by Carter Ellsworth for those few that did not enjoy the above animations.

"Meet the Team" Kabraxis

I'm sure you guys are fairly familiar with Garrett and myself by now. Garrett our smart, sexy, savvy code monkey that works magic with keyboard strokes. This Genel Jumalon guy that goes under the alias of Tastyrice who makes chickens. Finally we have some guy that does the music.

Well it's about time we shed some light on our epic bard and his tales of courage and fortitude against thousands of man eating chickens.

Meet the Bard

Name: Ugurcan "Kabraxis" Orcun. People often know me by my nickname :)

Age: 22

From: Izmir / Turkey.

Experience with game industry: Playing games since '97 and interested with Industry itself since 2003. Worked on an AAA title game, and few little Indie games.

Random Chicken Fact: Chickens can be distinguished by their sounds.

Musical Direction: Since game itself is influenced from north European myths, I'm aiming for European-folk tunes. But also I want it to be somewhat unique. So I'm trying to use lesser-known instruments with light orchestral themes, for in-game music.

Inspirations: Tough question. I love to listen every kind of World music, those are my primary inspirations. I also enjoy to listen post-rock, down tempo, dark industrial, acid-jazz, and blues-rock. And many Video Game music composers, including but not only, Paul Romero, Jeremy Soule, Mark Morgan and Matt Uelmen are inspired me to go ahead with composing.

How would I survive the Ragnarok: I think Ive learned some survival tips from video games, like using a med-kit and finding lots of ammo before boss fights. I hope those work properly.

Closing Chicken Comments: I'm eager to see the Cook dwarf makes some chicken fries.

Chickens!

Kabraxis has done a fantastic job being our Audio Designer at French Rice games. If you guys have not checked out our almost finished Survivor's of Ragnarok theme yet I highly suggest you do so. We conveniently embedded the theme below.

Those of you lucky to catch our live stream earlier this week you were treated to me working on battle animations while Garrett had a chance to talk about combat in depth. We hope our community enjoyed that little bit of insight into our development workflow. Make sure you guys keep an eye out on next week's post as we will be revealing more detail about our combat system.

We'll end this weeks news post with more Starcraft 2 Contest entries. This entry was submitted by "Vm Yopopo" with his take of our Dwarven "Inspirational" posters.

Breaking The Silence

About damn time those guys at French Rice Games made a proper news post about the development of their bloody game! Those guys not giving a single word of what they have been doing, being out for so long. I bet they did very little work on Survivors of Ragnarok since our last update. They probably have been on vacation taking advantage of Valve's Steam sales and playing video games nonstop for the better part of the past month.

Yes a small degree of procrastination was involved. To be fair however we have been participating in some Summer Camp activities...

Regardless it's back to the good old bi-weekly updates. So what have we done since Alpha 7?

-Added an installer for SoR (unfortunately right now it's windows based but plans are in way for mac and Linux).
-Added OpenAL support. We are now fully ready for both sound effects and music.
-Added a few placeholder sound effects.
-Added a new crafting table.
-Added a new item:
-Wooden Planks (crafted from lumber)
-Fixed (hopefully) the freezing issue with dwarfs sleeping.

*8.0.1 Bugfix
-Fixed a bug with the inventory.

SURVIVORS OF RAGNARÖK - ALPHA 8

[/center]

We ended our last post with a Starcraft 2 Give-Away before we went on a gamer vacation. There have been many quality entries have been submitted and it was VERY difficult to choose the winner.

In fact we wanted to share many of the entries since we've had many amazing submissions entered for this contest. If anyone has any objections to presenting their submissions in public please send us an email as we will be showing off our Starcraft 2 submissions within the coming weeks.
Congradulations to Mathieu De Coster and his epic poem. It's one thing to entertain us (which in all actuality is not a very difficult feat), it is however impressive to craft a poem that rhymes and tells a story!

Mathie De Coster:
A dwarf once entered a strange realm
Wearing nothing but a helm
He could not see or spot a thing
Except some sort of fairy ring
Our friend trod careful closer, but
Only found a cashew nut
He ate it with much pleasure, when
He suddenly saw a cattle pen

There were no cows
Nor calfs or bulls
There were but elev’n animals

Our dwarf found there
A goat and chicksHe built a house and stayed with them.

To wrap up this very very overdue review we'll end it with a user request. The Real Vivle requested we present his entry even if he didn't win.
